Mixed Dal Vadas

mix dal vada

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup chana dal
  • 1 cup mixed dal (I use urad, moong and little toor dal)
  • 2 sprigs curry leaves
  • 1 inch piece ginger, peeled and roughly chopped
  • 4-5 spicy green chillies (adjust according to your spice preference)
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp haldi powder
  • 2-3 tbsp rice flour
  • salt to taste

Method:

  1. Wash all the dals together and soak for 3-4hours.
  2. Drain the water and add to a mixer jar, pulse until coarsely ground.

Note: There should be some dal left whole and some ground, and remove to a bowl.

  1. In a pestle and mortar, pound the chillies and ginger until fine.

Tip: Add this to the dal mixture, along with chopped curry leaves.

  1. Add salt to taste, red chilli powder, haldi powder.
  2. Add 2-3 tbsp rice flour and mix to form a dough.
  3. Shape the dough into flat rounds and deep fry on medium low heat until crispy on all sides.

Note: Make sure to make them quite flat, as they will puff up on frying.

  1. This can also be done in appe pan, adding a little oil to each.
  2. Serve hot.
